The Faith of Young Goodman Brown. Faith, and the struggle to keep it, is the theme of Nathaniel Hawthornes Young Goodman Brown. For to thee is this world given (217). But when he hears many voices and among them is Faith, in desperation he yells out to her. In this story, Hawthorne gives Goodman Browns wife the name of Faith for the obvious symbolism and irony it creates.

Pray, tarry with me this night, dear husband, of all nights in the year! Throughout the story, Goodman Brown is constantly the house on mango street trying to keep his religious faith, which is lost, somewhat, when his wife, Faith, submits to evil. I have scruples, touching the matter thou wotst of (213). As the story begins, Young Goodman Brown bids farewell to his young wife Faith, as she was aptly named (211). Therefore, that cry not only means he lost his wife, but it also means that his beliefs were shattered.
