immediately starts seeing the memories of Wharton that John is carrying. The others are very skeptical, pointing out that Coffey is a convicted murderer, and it would be disastrous if they would be discovered, or if he escapes. Percy demonstrates a severe sadistic streak, but, as the nephew of Louisiana's First Lady, he cannot be held to account. John had been sentenced to death after being convicted of raping and murdering two white girls. Although distraught over the notion of being executed while innocent, John tells Paul that he wishes to die; he views the world as a cruel place and constantly feels the cruelty of humanity like shards of glass in his head. Later, Paul is seen at Elaine's funeral, quietly wondering just how the Battle Between Good and Evil in Heart of Darkness much longer he has to. The next day, Paul and the others have a talk with Coffey, even asking him if they should just "let him." Coffey does not want to escape, as he doesn't want to get them in trouble.
