She states that she is "not looking like anybody but me" (452). In fact, everyone has probably heard the old saying "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure." This story's title foreshadows events to come by implying that something emotionally tragic happens. However, perhaps there is another alternative. It becomes evident that the narrator has gone through serious depression and ultimately suicide in a desperate escape to end her misery. Although coming of age is a positive turn, it requires negative experiences to be complete. The narrators complicated relationship with her previous boyfriend, Martin Collingwood, triggers a lot of complex situations, which ultimately leads to her rapid maturity. The depression that the narrator experiences contributes to her experiencing the coming of age and leads to her irresponsibility, being the final reason for the narrator to experience coming of age Coming of age exists through the narrators irresponsibility.
