A Rose for Emily, the, a Rose for Emily"s below are all either spoken by The townspeople or refer to The townspeople. However, the canterbury Tales - The Skipper similarity of both stories lies within the characters. A flawed relationship between the town and Miss Emily is seen throughout the story. According to the story, Colonel Sartoris had been dead for almost ten years. Appleton Aguilar, for instance, contends that Miss Emily insists on maintaining her own existence, which the townspeople continually refuse to allow as they wish her to sustain her position as icon and memorial to the antebellum South" (30). They complained of a foul stench that radiated from Emily's house and reeked their entire neighborhood. The narrator reports one episode that is particularly telling: When the town got mailboxes, Miss Emily alone refused to let them fasten the metal numbers above her door and attach a mailbox. Before her death, according to the townspeople, old lady Wyatt is "completely crazy" She seems to be in the story to suggest that insanity runs in Emily's family. Though this is a short story, the writer has split it into 5 parts, each part recording different parts of the protagonist's life. Emilys body is laid out in the parlor, and the women, town elders, and two cousins attend the service. Sartoris had exempted Emily's family from paying taxes after her father's death. In Emily's case she wanted to change a number of times but never had the support of her own town.
