According to the story, Colonel Sartoris had been dead for almost ten years. Before her death, according to the townspeople, old lady Wyatt is "completely crazy" She seems to be in the story to suggest that insanity runs in Emily's family. Though this is a short story, the writer has split it into 5 parts, each part recording different parts of the protagonist's life. Emilys body is laid out in the parlor, and the women, town elders, and two cousins attend the service. Sartoris had exempted Emily's family from paying taxes after her father's death. In Emily's case she wanted to change a number of times but never had the support of her own town.
