teachers know this, because most of them start with those kinds of skills early. But in the beginning, you can build a bit of progress in teaching reading and, in fact, reading can be the basis for oral language development. And it might be the case that they need to take summer school. Delia Pompa: I assume you were talking about assessment at the classroom level. A good command of English will be indispensable to me at work. So most of the current work is really to have that become part of the planning process rather than to see them as two separate realms under the Kapok Tree of instruction. Some children who are a language minority and English learners actually have been born and raised in the United States, so they have experienced a context wherein English is spoken all around them. Robin Scarcella: A lot of our schools hope that that would happen. Bette Marie: It's hard, and at some points in time you feel like giving up, because maybe you think it's not worth. They are highly communicative, but it's not because their language is advanced, but because they have developed strategies for communicating which don't rely on oral language. It must be an important topic.
